We tried the free trial about a year ago, and Ezri wasn't really keen on it. Lots of kids I know like it though. Do they still have the free trial?

Yes, Huddy's doing it now. He seems to like it so far..... I'm quite surprised at how much he knows already - clearly he''s been teaching himself to read when I wasn't looking :2lol

My daughter loves it and spent all afternoon on it yesterday. She might not go back to it for a while, but when she does it will be with enthusiasm. :-)

We did the Reading Eggs free trial for a fortnight, DS sat on my lap and we played with it a couple of times, then he never went back even though I encouraged him. He's 3, and keen to learn to read (so he says), but at this early stage he prefers reading-type things that involve interacting with me directly and whatever involves making things from scratch e.g. making and using flashcards to match capital and lower case letters; making little booklets with names of family members, animals etc. Maybe in a year or 2 we'll give Reading Eggs another go.

My two are playing it now. They have been playing it for a few days now. It seems to be a good system, mixing the miaoow sight words with phonics.

Sook (3.5) loves it and asks for it. We now have the books and try to do one a day with her... otherwise she will hop on there or starfall (or mickey mouse clubhouse or playhouse disney LOL) and have a play by herself!!!

dj like it at first, but the novelty wore off in after about 2 weeks, glad I didn't pay for it because he hasn't wanted to go back.

We're doing the trial now. Kai likes it. Mira wants to do it too but not sure if she's ready. Don't think we'll buy it but have enjoyed the trial so far.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a similar site that deals with numbers, counting etc?

TImely thanks. I've been thinking about it lately too. I have a friend whose son is just 6 and an amazing reader. I think I recall her using reading eggs with him. I've been meaning to ask her.

Interesting. I hadn't heard of it before now.

Sam has become very interested in Jolly Phonics(JP) in the last 10 months. When I heard the school he was starting at this year was moving to JP I bought him a book of the stories which had all of the sounds in it. He loved it, wanted to read it every night in first term of kindergarten, and I still finding him looking at it himself at time, tracing over the large letters.

Lily is 8 and a late reader and Heath is 6.5 and they're both loving Reading Eggs and making good progress with it. We have the paid sub. When they remember to get on to it, they play for a couple of hours if I let them!

We've been doing the free trial here too, but my DD (just turned 3) can't really operate a mouse yet or the laptop key pad and that can be frustrating for her as she wants to operate it herself without my help and being internet based we then end up with her clicking on everything! She doesn't get on the computer for anything else due to the same problems but loves doing those sort of games on my iphone where she has the touch screen. I might check out starfall....

Itunes has a LOT of really good games for beginning readers, and a lot of other beginning skills. Not so much later on that I've found, but still really cool.

Ezri used to watch the Jolly Phonics video over and over when she was really little, but then when we ditched out video player we couldn't play it anymore. She didn't seem to be using it anyway, as she had no interest at all in reading. Then suddenly in the last few months she's just started reading out of nowhere. I'm sure all that watching of the video helped her to really internalise the letter sounds and helped her a lot.

actually further on after the activation email when i signed up the specific child it asked for a code if i had one... so hopefully it worked.

Jordy has completed two lessons today! LOL! He really enjoys it. I think he finds it is moving a bit slow and asking him to repeat a task a few times more than he wants to but i imagine once he gets through the very early stuff he will soak it up.

he's onto lesson #7 :2lol He calls it the Easter Egg game and is hooked. I hope it continues because in the space of one day he is recognising a heap of complete words, sounding out new words much more accurately than ever before, and looking for sentences to read. I am really impressed with it.

does anyone know if during the free trial you are restricted to the first map (and the first 10 lessons)? Jordy has finished them but the next map is still locked. Not sure if i should quickly redo lesson 10 to see if something went wrong at the end or if i just need to pay the subscription before it opens...??

jodiemiller

We could never get beyond the first map. I think you have to subscribe/buy to get the rest.

michelle_j_r

not sure if you had to subscribe in the end.... Reading Eggs had some technical issues and was stuck on Map 1 for a couple of days. They emailed me and it went back online this morning.

Jordy loves it. It is now extremely frustrating (in a good way!) reading him stories at bedtime cos he stops me every sentence and sounds out all the beginning sounds and he picks up on it everytime i say a word that starts with 'b' or 's' etc.

He completed the first 10 lessons in 2 days and finished off two more lessons this morning. He is recognising all the short words they hae given him so far and is trying to sound out all the others. I think he's hooked. Looks like this has come at the perfect time for what he is ready to learn at the moment.

He gets dead set excited every time an egg cracks! :2lol

Thanks, all!
