View Full Version : Newbies can get help here!
Hi all,
I am not a newbie but I heard from a newbie today about the difficulties a newbie has working out how this place runs and what some of our shortening mean etc so I thought I would start a thread so that they had a place to ask questions and we could all help them. You know, because that is the sort of place this is, welcoming, inclusive and helpful!
:D
Who's going to be brave enough to post the first question? :wink_smile

Great thread, Kali!
Lots of info for newbies (and oldies sometimes ;)) in the FAQ's (http://www.intuitiveparenting.info/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_faq#faq_vb3_board_usage), too :)
Any questions, ask away :)

well i have worked out how to post and where to look up things, how to PM (private message), how to subscribe to a thread, so i am going to try and do my own thread tomorrow :gasp
But I was wondering what some of the LINGO is...
eg. atm
btw
roflk
ip - intuitive parenting - worked that one out finally!
and a few others i can't remember but was reading and went: WHAT THE???
Also i see some smilies people use but they aren't showing up for me?:unsure
AND how can i make my "signature" fit what i want to - it kept saying it was too long and i had to edit but it was only less than a line!:(
Thanks!
nat :-)

DH, in the appropriate context, is also commonly dick head ;)
DS and DD are often followed by a number, sometimes the age of the child, sometimes indicating their birth order.
DSD dear step daugher
DSS dear step son
DF dear fiance or dear friend
DP dear partner
DW dear wife
MIL/FIL/PIL mother in law/father in law/parents in law
kotc kiss on the cheek
((((hugs)))) arms around you
I don't know what quotation you mean on the profile page, I don't spend a lot of time in mine :)
Oh goodie! I started a useful thread! See I can mod without being a mod :wink2

Well done Kali!!!
I thought of another one that seemed to have even long time members stumped...
The 'New Posts' button up top of the screen, click on that and it will bring up all the posts that have been made while you've been away, and when you post in or view them they will disappear (like magic :2lol) until the next time someone posts in that thread :) (if someone can splain that better please do :blush :2lol)

Also i see some smilies people use but they aren't showing up for me?
When posting, rather than "Post Quick Reply", click "Go Advanced". You'll see a few smilies on the right, and down the bottom of the box, click on "more". Maximise that window & you'll be able to see all the smilies available.

where can I add a quotation on my personal profile page?
If you want a quotation in your signature, go to "User CP" then "Edit Signature"
If you just want it on your profile page, there's no specific place, but you could click "edit your details" & put it in the biography somewhere. MInd you, if you have a quote in your sig, you'll automatically be able to see it on your profile page under "About Me" anyway :)

Ive just aded an acronyms list for anyone who needs to look things up (+ never be afraid to ask in the thread either if you are confused!)
you can view it by clicking here (http://www.intuitiveparenting.info/showthread.php?t=264) (its in this forum)
I see the new posts function has been mentioned - there is also a forum jump menu at the bottom of every page. You can choose any forum to go to, including some site areas, like your use CP, private messages etc... and jump directly there :)

There is a cool little feature that allows you to easily see who on your friends list is on line, and you can PM them quickly from there.
If you go up the top of the page and click on Quick Links> Open Contacts popup
You can see all of your friends listed, and message them from there.
To add people to your friends list, simply go to their public profile (click on their username for a drop down menu of options), and click on add as friend on the right hand side of the page.

Yes - I have been wanting to know where this box is too and I cannot find it, I have just checked and it is not visible on my CP, can I please have it enabled? Thankyou :)
PS - I actually don't have anything that profound to replace 'intuitive' with, but I have searched for this for days, because I knew I had done it (I think) in the old forum, so it was bugging me that I couldn't find it in this forum - but I knew it had to be somewhere, as I could see others had changed theirs! :) v. funny for me going crazy over this! :)

I've just tried to fix it for you, but need some help - I've asked the other mods, and we should be able to sort it out for you soon.

Maybe I'm just a bit too new... low post count, recent join date, or something? I still can't see it, just options to enter a homepage url and various methods for IM.
But hey, it's no biggie, I'm quite happy to leave it.
Thanks for your time :)
