View Full Version : How young is too young?

Brock is now 19mths and of course still in a cot. He has more meat on him and is taller that what Harry was at his age. I've noticed in the last week or so that Brock has been throwing himself around in his cot more and waking himself up. I can hear the sides of the cot banging a couple of times, more and more forceful and then 30secs later crying.

H mentioned last night about putting Brock into a big bed, with a side guard of course. I can see how he thinks that with more room in his bed, Brock won't wake up as much. Brock's sleeping has always been challenging so anything we can do to help him sleep is a bonus.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm mourning the fact that Brock is my last baby and that he's growing up, and how quickly he is growing up. This just seems the real end to his babyhood. I'm not I'm ready for him to be in a big boy's bed yet. It really does seem to be the end. But would it be better for him to be in a bed and have more room?

Just not sure

A started sleeping in H's bed with rail at 15 months (most of the time) and H went in there when she was 2. They both slept better with more space, although they also slept well in our bed...we slept better when they were in their own bed, but had to get up more often when they needed us. It was a trade off. Thankfully co-sleeping with B has been a dream so far, she is not wriggly or an all night feeder :)

Elora slept in a bed since she was one and a half, no side rail but a cot mattress beside the bed if needed.
Josie was in a toddler bed from one as she never had a cot, then moved into a single bed when she was nearly two as we got Elora a bigger bed and moved Elora's down to Josie. Josie still occasionally co-sleeps with me and its lovely, but she also loves her bed.

IIRC it was about Brock's age that we moved Millie to a toddler bed. It was good as she could just hop out of bed and come into us if she wanted to rather than us having to get up and pick her up and bring her in. Yes, I'm lazy... :2lol Down side is that she could get out and wonder around, I suppose, but she never did that.

I happen to have one here now she's in her big-girl bed. It's white (not pink, lol), and taking up too much space in the room that should be the guest room... If you are interested and can wait for a while, we might be doing a road trip to Tuggerah before Christmas.

My girls were in beds just before they could walk - around 15 months with Sophia. Their cots convert to low toddler beds, so it was easy for them to climb in/out, and they were willing to sleep there.

Billy's cot became a toddler bed around his 2nd birthday, he was already walking. But sometimes he still keeps getting up at night and goes into a portacot next to his bed.

I'd say why not try it, but keep your options open to go back to the cot if he's not ready to stay in the bed.

Thanks everyone, I bought a side rail and a new doona cover today for him. Of course his doona cover has cars on it :). Thanks K but we already have 2 beds to chose from for him. I like your idea Em of keeping my options open. I think we'll put up the bed over the weekend and see how he goes.

I do think it will be better for him....but can't he stay my baby for just a little bit longer :(

I sometimes wonder if Billy's non-talking thing is his way of still being my baby. I'm sure Brock will still do lots of other "baby" things for a bit longer, just enjoy it while it lasts.

Honey he's always gonna be your baby!! :kiss

We have used toddler beds with our kids (well just the one bed used by both at seperate times :2lol) and it has been fantastic easy for them to get in and out of, has a little more freedom then a cot as they can stick their lil feet off the end when it's warm, the cot matress fits it too so no need to buy linen :2lol

But Ben is getting to big fo rit now so we will be selling it soon but it has been wonderful for us

I asked Billy on his second birthday if he was still my baby, and he looked into my eyes and said "bay-bee":wub This from a boy who was not talking at all! So I agree with Kyls, he'll always be your baby no matter what milestones he reaches.

No worries. If anyone wants to borrow a toddler bed for an indefinite period, let me know! :D

mine were in our bed from day 1 ;) so i don't reckon any time is too young to get them out of the cot

Jordy went into a big bed almost as soon as he could walk (around 15 or 16months i think). He hated not being able to get out when he woke and he was sooooo much happier out of the cot.

Darcy would never sleep in a cot otherwise i reckon i would stick him in one now! LOL!

And i know what you mean about Brock being your baby. I always planned to have a third and all of a sudden i realise that Darcy is my last baby and it's a bit freaky.

DS was in a trundle bed on the floor as his first bed, it felt safe.

Well I did it. The bed and up and the room is re-arranged. Thank goodness everything fits back in just.

We just have to wait and see how he goes tonight.

Well my baby looked sooooo tiny in his big bed, but he well. He didn't fall out or bash himself against the wall. He did end up at the bottom of the bed at one stage and got a little confused. But all in all he did well and managed to sleep, the biggest block being 5hrs, which is awesome for Brock.

Jordy used to move around and end up sideways and upside-down and all over the place. I used to be amazed at the odd positions he'd end up in.
