Just got back from a play date and my friend was saying that at the playgroup she goes to they were singing the alphabet song and finished off with 'zee' not 'zed'. Is the American way of pronouncing it taught in schools these days? I've been teaching my kids to pronounce it as 'zed'. :unsure

It's still zed, but I think the trouble is that the alphabet song is american, and thus, it's designed to rhyme with zee.

Some of my kids say 'zee'. They tell me "'cos it rhymes, Mum"... I really prefer 'zed'.

My mum wasn't strict about much at all, but *always* corrected us when singing the alphabet we heard from other kids (didn't actually watch TV at home though). Zed, not zee. And aitch not haitch. :)

there is another alphabet song courtesy of puzzle play that ends w, x, y, zed, now we get ahead.
But in truth i happily use both zee and zed and don't much mind which my kids use.

it is ZED in canada but cause we are close to the states some of the electronic toys say "zee".. although I'll give leap frog a pat on the back they make toys for the canadian/british/australian markets and they say ZED.
but sadly dr. Seuss books always make rhymes with Z as if it were ZEE not ZED so I read those books to DD and say ZEE so it rhymes but tell her it is american.
in school they accept american spellings here as long as you are consistent.
if you say color in your essay... it has to always be color.. if you spell it colour and then color again.. you'll get docked marks for spelling..
so hard to be their neighbours... (or neighbors)

americanised (americanized) spelling is slowly working it's way in here too Pinky, and we're miles away! They're taking over the world!

I'm sad about the Americanisation of 'proper' English.
And yes - "haitch" has always raised my hackles :2lol
"and now I know my ABC, next time won't you sing instead" ;)
my children learn very early not to say zee.

Zed or zee, haitch or aitch. English is such a bastardized language anyway ;).

We are those horrible people that say zee and haitch.....it was taught that way when I was in school ( or at least never corrected) and my mum and dad do the same. I'm not fussed, but then I was brought up in a backend spit of town <- see not much hope for me is there lol
And yes - "haitch" has always raised my hackles :2lol same here
