I'm wondering how successful people have been by planting by the moon and what are the basic principles?
i try to. basically, leafy greens in the first week following the full moon, other above ground second week, root/below ground third week and weeding etc fourth week. i think anyway. this site is good for showing the moon's position and has a lunar chart

and this one for explaining it better

Lynn Bagnall has a book too that is on my wish list for "one day".... i have been planning to borrow it from the library.
I intend to start planting by the moon but so far have had to just plant to suit what the boys are doing regardless of what the moon might think :)

I've only just started, so I'll report back as things start to grow :)
I bought the perpetual calendar from http://www.moongardeningcalendar.com/
I also find the info on this site (http://www.astrologysolutions.com.au/news.html#Anchor-Plantin-64751) good - and very specific (although I find it easier following the general rules, as I'm not always able to get in the garden at particular times)

We have that moon calendar, Ny. Highly recommended. Gotta love a perpetual calendar! :)

I'm just happy if I find a spare moment to get out into the garden, so waiting to plant at a certain time doesn't work for me. I'm more of a chuck it in and see if it grows gardener than a planner. :)
