Hi All,

Anybody know what nutritional deficiencies can contribute to cracked nipples??

Have a friend (who I was so blessed to attend and support her in birth) who has cracked nipples.. the attachment looks pretty good..I am sure that things will resolve in time.. if she perseveres.. just would like to give her the best shot you know- she hasn't fed her last 2 children.. not sure how much she really wants to feed this time- but would like to support her with as much info as possible- and she did ask..

So.. any thoughts..

the reference book I have I must have lent out.. Maybe BW you have it.. and can look it up.. what comes to mind is zinc, magnesium and maybe the B's..

thanks

I've got it and I'll go and get it now! but off the top of my head they sound familiar. Those authors are massive zinc and magnesium fans.

From The Natural Way to Better Breastfeeding by Francesca Naish and Janette Roberts:

"Zinc helps prevent cracked nipples ... Adequate zinc levels can help to protect you from cracked nipples. Proper attachment of your newborn to the breast is the best way to avoid this condition, but robust nipple tissue is important too..." p68

There are a few other references to zinc building strong nipple tissue, but no mention of other minerals or supplements.

There is a big section of remedies/tips for helping cracked nipples. Let me know if you want me to type out some of them. Homeopathics etc.

Are you working tomorrow Kylie? Do you want me to bring the books over or you can collect them on your way to or from if you like. You know my brain is scatty, I've only had them for over 3 years! :gasp

thanks BW.. don't worry about your scatty brain- mine is the same..

I am not at work tomorrow- first day of Mid.. but if you are in the area you can drop them in- Ann and Dot will give them to me (the girls on the desk) I'm in on Tuesday.. but don't stress.. I thought it was zinc.. a cure all!! will pass that on to my friend..

How about I drop in to yours one day this week- that is easier than getting kids out of the car and all that.. either tomorrow or Tues.. PM me your address :)

They say zinc is great for PND too.. might have to make sure I am getting enough for all the above reasons
