Here are some sites that you might find useful when looking for your nearest complementary health practitioner (for those who have not seen this list elsewhere). I'll update the list as I come across new sites:
www.naturaltherapypages.com.au
www.atms.com.au
www.anta.com.au
www.acupuncture.org.au
www.homoeopathyoz.org
www.chiropractors.asn.au
www.osteopathic.com.au
www.kinesiology.nu/
And for your four- legged friends....
www.chirovet.com.au
www.ava.com.au
Naturopaths are essentially the GP's of the Complementary Medicine (CM) world. A lot of focus is placed on lifestyle choices, diet, exercise, etc. They can prescribe herbs, homoeopathics, nutritional supplements and often use tactile therapies like massage & reflexology. Naturopaths are a good starting point for general health / wellness using Western-style CM.
If you are a grounded, earthy-type person, you may find you respond well to herbal medicine. As herbs generally grow in soil, they suit people who perhaps are more about body than spirit. A herbalist will have the most comprehensive knowledge of appropriate herbs to use.
If you are more of a energy-centred, emotional type, you may find you respond better to homoeopathy, flower essences, kinesiology & acupuncture. They work more with the energy of the body/mind/spirit, which is something modern Western medicine doesn't really do (although acupuncture is becoming widely accepted as Medical Scientists have found a way to explain the results in scientific terms).
Chiropractic & Osteopathy are similar in technique, the variation being chiro's focus more on the nervous system whereas osteo's work more on musculature. Therapeutic massage can help both these areas. They all aim to alleviate any pressure or imbalance in the body which can in turn affect other muscles & organs.
These are very generalised summaries & even different practitioners within the same modality will give different outcomes. Like finding a good GP, it is often a case of trial & error to find what & who suits you best.
